For the construction of a unique curved staircase in southern Germany, precise preparation and well thought-out planning were crucial for success

The Goal

Construction of an architecturally unique curved staircase in the entrance hall of a new corporate headquarters.
With a new administration building, AUMA Riester GmbH & Co. KG, a mechatronics specialist for actuators and valve drives, expanded its location in Müllheim, Baden – including an individual spiral staircase as an eye-catcher.

The Project

Summary:
The company is building new headquarters with unique architectural features. One of them is a uniquely shaped and rounded concrete staircase, the highlight of the entrance hall. The stairs themselves revolve upward irregularly around a tulip-shaped inside core.

Challenge:
The challenge facing MEVA engineers was translating the architect’s 3-D model into a buildable and realistic plan in the first place.

The Solution

1. Division of the construction sequence
First, the engineers in Haiterbach split the 3-D model of the staircase into eight separate units, then worked out an exact pour plan for each.

2. Subdivision of the formwork units
Each unit was separated into formwork sections which were planned in CAD and handed over to be manufactured by the special designs production company Kiefer Schalungsbau and delivered onto the site and assembled to form the respective component formwork.

3. Planning of concreting sequences
Taking into account several factors of the unique staircase architecture, the detailed pour outline and workflow planning for each unit, the site was able to start with the concrete pours without any delay.

The Outcome

With the help of the formwork planning developed by MEVA and the creation of a concreting specification – based on 3-D planning by the architect’s office – the so-called “centurion staircase” was finished on time and to the satisfaction of the architect, contractor and client.
